Support of The Patient Library Project

The Patient Library Project aims to furnish medical facilities throughout Japan with a library intended for use by patients. The Project is operated by an NPO, the “Committee for the Study of Medical Quality” (also known as Shitsuken, headed by Dr. Shigeaki Hinohara, Administrative Director). AstraZeneca supports its activities in full support of the Project's intent.
The Patient Library Project

By making libraries more readily accessible, the Project intends to:
1.Encourage patients to make full use of libraries so that they may develop a better understanding of their medical conditions and treatments and, as a result, take part in various medical efforts with peace of mind and confidence;

2.Aid medical staff in administering treatment - the providers of medicine, especially doctors, are often extremely busy, and a well-designed library is expected to equip them with an exceptionally useful tool for offering medical information to their patients and in making their work more efficient;

3.Contribute to improvement in medical care; the Project's ultimate significance lies in its potential contribution to the improvement of the quality of medical care by incorporating patient-oriented libraries into the framework of Japan's medical system through study and development of new ways of offering information, for example, a study may be made to determine how doctors may instruct their patients on the use of libraries. (In the past, the Shitsuken helped popularize the functional assessment of hospitals and Clinical Pass in Japan.)
AstraZeneca supports these activities and gives full support to the Project's goals.
